Orbics is a social networking platform for students, researchers, and anyone connected, directly or indirectly, to academia. It is being built to link people across fields without distraction, and without an algorithm competing for their attention.
Social connection and collaboration matter across every discipline. Research, thoughtful work, and real impact depend on them. Traditional academia and today's informal culture of reading and writing share this trait: students, researchers, and scholars want to share their work with colleagues and friends, and explain what they are working on, however small the project.
Collaboration and debate require a social layer that lets ideas move between people without friction. This need has grown quickly in recent years, as more students and academics look for ways to share their work openly and connect with peers in their field worldwide. Orbics is being built to meet that need directly.
Several platforms already attempt this. Their algorithms, however, are built to hold attention rather than serve it, and attention is the one resource academic work cannot afford to lose.
A different approach was needed: one without an engagement-driven algorithm, built instead to support meaningful work within the academic world. Orbics is taking shape around that idea.
Orbics is designed to connect people around shared interests and shared direction, without distraction, whether that work sits within a single field or spans several. The platform aims to preserve the social character of academic life. Researchers from STEM, the humanities, and business will be welcome here, as will students at every stage, from high school through the PhD level, and professors as well.
